Photo Tribute to Space Shuttle Discovery

Space Shuttle Discovery - STS-120 Launch

Space Shuttle Discovery is about to make its last launch from Launch Complex 39A for mission STS-133 at Kennedy Space Center. With only two Space Shuttle launches left, I wanted to publish my best photos of Discovery.

Above, Discovery launched from LC-39A on Oct 23, 2007 for mission STS-120. I was just east of the VAB, it's the closest I've ever been to a Shuttle launch.

I worked at CCAFS for about nine years and during that time I had the chance to see Space Shuttle operations up close. Here are a few pictures I was able to take through the years.

Discovery - STS-114 - on Crawler - Transporter

Pictured above is the roll out of Discovery for the "Return to Flight" mission STS-114 which launched on July 26, 2005.

Crawler - Transporter with Discovery - STS-114

This view offers a close up of Discovery on the Crawler - Transporter. The roll out from the VAB was a historic occasion as it was the first mission after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

STS-119

Pictured above is Discovery on LC-39A for mission STS-119 which launched on Mar 15, 2009. Discovery delivered a truss and batteries to the International Space Station, a frequent destination for Discovery.

Currently, Discovery is set for lift off in early November. Check the Space Shuttle Launch Schedule for more information about the times and dates of shuttle launches.
